Day 1: Lisbon

Lisbon, Belem Tower at sunset on the bank of the Tagus River
Lisbon, Belem Tower

We begin our 5-day itinerary in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, a city rich in history and culture.

On your first day in Lisbon, start by exploring the historic neighborhoods of Alfama, Baixa, and Bairro Alto.

Alfama is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon and is known for its narrow streets, traditional Portuguese houses, and stunning views over the city. It’s a great place to get lost, and you will find plenty of small cafes and shops to explore. One of the most famous landmarks in Alfama is the Castelo de São Jorge, a Moorish castle that dates back to the 11th century and offers panoramic views over the city.

Baixa is a neighborhood in the center of Lisbon that was completely rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. It is known for its grid-like streets and classical architecture and is home to many important landmarks, such as Praça do Comércio and the Arco da Rua Augusta. Praça do Comércio is one of the largest squares in Europe and is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Royal Palace.

Bairro Alto is one of the most bohemian neighborhoods in Lisbon and is famous for its nightlife, shops, and restaurants. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat, have a drink, or simply people-watch. You can reach Bairro Alto by taking one of the historic tram lines, such as the iconic Tram 28.

After exploring the historic neighborhoods, visit some of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks. Start with the Belem Tower, a 16th-century tower that was built to commemorate the voyages of discovery made by Portuguese explorers. It’s a stunning example of Manueline architecture and is now a symbol of Portugal’s maritime history. Nearby, you will find the Jerónimos Monastery, another stunning example of Manueline architecture that was built in the 16th century to commemorate the voyages of Vasco da Gama.

Finally, finish your day with a stroll along the riverside promenade and enjoy the views of the 25 de Abril Bridge, which is a suspension bridge that spans the Tagus River and connects Lisbon to the nearby city of Almada. This bridge is similar in design to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and is a great place to catch the sunset.

This stunning palace was built in the 19th century and is known for its bright colors, ornate decoration, and stunning views over the surrounding landscape. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the palace and admire its grand halls, intricate gardens, and panoramic views.

Return to Lisbon with your private driver in the evening.

Simply outstanding! We visited Italy in September & used Luxe for all our tours and we can honestly say, they were the best! Right from the start, communication was easy and professional. Amy and her guides were able to customize their tours to suit our interests! If you want bespoke tours, I wouldn’t use anyone else. We would highly recommend Luxe & will definitely use them again when we next visit Italy!

Overnight in Coimbra.

The best trip ever! By far the best travel company in all of Europe. We are a group of 9 who just got back from a French/Spanish/Italian cruise. I chose not to book any excursions through the boat but instead stumbled upon Travel by Luxe. All I had to do was explain to Graziano what ports we were coming into and the gist of what we wanted to see and he handled the rest. Within 48 hours I has a complete proposal with details, pictures, suggestions, itinerary, etc for all 7 cities that we were visiting. Graziano also gave me his personal phone number and not only did we text multiple times before the trip but also during. He was constantly checking in and was always available to help coordinate meeting places, contact people and transportation. Graziano also notified me of schedule changes that the boat made before it was made public to the passengers so were able to adopt to all changes very easily. Additionally on the last day we were so tired we chose not to go on one of the tours so Graziano rolled over our money and we used it as a credit to get to the airport. This was my first time in Europe and I am a nervous person and since I was put in charge of all the tours I was extremely concerned something would go wrong. That was not the case at all. It was PERFECTO!! I would highly recommend this company to anyone travelling to Europe and I will certainly plan on using them again in the future. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions at all!!

Amazing Travel Agency! Marta helped us plan our whole trip and it was absolutely amazing! We did private walking tours, private winery tours, and everything was great! Marta made the itinerary with our interests in mind and was extremely helpful! The tour guides (Viola and Jessica to name two of the many) were outstanding! Marta also helped plan the perfect engagement! We highly recommend this company and will be using them again!
