Perhaps the most famous location on-site to see the plaster cast bodies is in the Garden of the Fugitives, but they are exhibited throughout the ruins. The casts were created by pouring plaster into the voids that were left when the bodies decayed after being encased in volcanic ash.
These models are deeply moving and elicit an undeniably empathetic response as the casts capture the form, posture, and in some cases even the clothing of those who were unfortunate enough to remain trapped in Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted.
