Best of Amalfi Coast Tour Description

Located at the very beginning of the Amalfi coastline and close to Pompeii & Naples, Sorrento is one of the biggest towns along the Amalfi Coast.

Here you will enjoy wandering through the picturesque streets with your local guide and visiting the boutiques of local artisans, including ceramics, wood inlaying & painting.  If you should so choose, we can also arrange a ceramics workshop here in Sorrento.  Furthermore, we will take you to learn about the art of wood inlaying with a local artisan. This used to be a craft that was handed down through the generations, but is now, unfortunately, becoming rare. This local artist will show you how wood laying is done and tell you all about his and his family’s story as multi-generational inlaid wood artisans.

Wonderfully planned and executed 10 day vacation across Italy. Great travel planning! After a friend recommended Travel by Luxe, we used their company to book a 9 day tour around Italy. We started with three days in Rome across a very rainy Christmas, then we were driven south for a quick day tour of the Amalfi coast and a night in Sorrento. The following day we saw Pompeii in the morning, had Pizza in Naples for lunch, and took the rapid train to Venice. Two fabulous days in Venice were followed by a day in Florence, then back to Rome by train for one more day, and then home. We had a fabulous time. Marta of Travel by Luxe proposed itineraries based on what we told her of our interests. We had private tours everywhere. She booked fabulous hotels for us - the rates were ok and we got upgraded in rooms at least a couple of times, as it was off season and the pandemic was still going strong. The tour guides were superb in Rome, Pompeii, Florence and especially Venice, where Giorgia Stainer was our guide for two days on the streets and waterways of Venice and Murano and Burano. All of the guides were knowledgeable and fun to talk to - about art, architecture, ruins, and food, for example. We had walking tours with nice lunches in Rome, Venice and Florence. No detail was unattended to. Transfers from airports, train stations, hotels, and the tourist sites were all right on time and very nice. Exceptional high points included Pompeii, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, a trip to the glass making factory, New Murano Gallery, near Venice, and all of the amazing art in Florence. Christmas Lunch in Rome and traditional foods in every city were standouts as well. This experience was a solid “5” on the five point scale. If I could rate it a “6” I probably would.

Positano

In the famous picturesque cliffside village of Positano, you can explore the sun-kissed terracotta houses, boutique shops, and enjoy a guided visit to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, famous for its Byzantine “Black Madonna” icon.

Visiting The Town of Amalfi With Your Guide

Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and stunning coastal scenery, the village of Amalfi is not to be missed. 

Amalfi is not just a feast for the eyes; it has a rich and intriguing history of its own. Your guide will be on hand to elaborate and comment on why the influence of the Byzantine Empire still persists to this day in some of the architecture found in the city. Perhaps the finest example of this is the 9th-century cathedral, which you will visit with your guide.

Before setting off on the gorgeous scenic drive to our next destination, you will stop off at The Museum of Handmade Paper. It is a little-known quirk of Amalfi that it was one of the first centers for making paper in all of Europe! And here you will have the opportunity to make your own handmade paper using the ancient method in one of the original paper mills!

Clifftop Village of Ravello

Finally, you’ll reach the stunning cliff-top town of Ravello. In this tiny town, you will experience what it’s like to live like a local.

You’ll visit Villa Cimbrone, whose luxurious gardens not only showcase rare botanical species, statues, fountains, and artificial grottos but also feature the “Infinity Terrace”, one of the most beautiful views in the world. Villa Ruffino is also another place not to be missed along the way.

Limoncello Tasting on Your Amalfi Coast Tour

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its “Amalfi Lemons” which also have protected IGP (indicazione geografica protetta) status in Italy! This means that only these lemons grown on the Amalfi Coast can be legally called Amalfi lemons.

As the business of lemons is a serious one, so is the business of the region’s most famous product: the digestive ‘limoncello’.  We can include a visit to a lemon farm or, indeed, a limoncello tasting in one of the delightful villages we’ll visit during our day.
