From exploring the charming towns of Perugia, Assisi, and Gubbio, to indulging in truffle hunting and wine tasting, to taking in the stunning views of Lake Trasimeno and the rolling hills of the Umbrian countryside, this tour is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of Umbria.

Day 1: Marmore Waterfalls

Marmore Waterfalls, Umbria, Italy

The Marmore Waterfalls in Italy are one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in the country. The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel in our luxury vehicle, where you’ll be given a brief introduction to the history and geography of the area.

The journey to the waterfalls takes about an hour, during which you’ll be able to enjoy the picturesque views of the surrounding countryside.

Once you arrive at the Marmore Waterfalls, you’ll be given a guided tour of the area, which includes a walk along a series of well-maintained trails that take you to the base of the falls. You’ll have ample opportunity to take photos and admire the stunning beauty of the cascading water. The falls are 165 meters high and divided into three sections, the Upper Falls, the Middle Falls, and the Lower Falls.

The tour also includes a visit to the nearby visitor center, where you can learn more about the history and ecology of the area. The center has a terrace where you can admire the waterfall from a different perspective. From there, you can take a lift to the top of the waterfall, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

After your hike, your private driver will collect you and bring your luggage to your accommodation in Terni. The journey will take approx 30 mins.

Day 2: Guided Tour of Terni

Terni, located in southeastern Umbria, is known as the “City of Lovers” due to its association with Saint Valentine, the patron saint of the city, who was born and became a bishop here. The remains of the saint are preserved in the basilica sanctuary in his honor. The city is situated on a large plain at the junction of the Serra and Nera rivers, and it is surrounded by a natural amphitheater of hills.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Terni was at the forefront of Italy’s industrial revolution, thanks in large part to the vast amount of power generated by the Marmore Falls. This earned the city the nickname “Manchester of Italy.”

After lunch in Terni, your chauffeur will take you on the 30-minute drive to Narni.

Guided Visit of Narni & The Mole of Narni (The Center of Italy!)

Narni, Umbria, heart of italy tour itinerary
Narni, Umbria, Italy

Narni is a small town in Umbria that has gained fame thanks to the fantasy novel “The Chronicles of Narnia” by English writer C.S. Lewis, who drew inspiration for the books from this location. However, there are many more reasons why Narni is a destination not to be missed. The town boasts a medieval historic center with beautiful buildings such as the Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo Comunale, and the Cathedral of San Giovenale.

In addition, Narni offers an underground path, discovered in 1979, that is rich in historical evidence from Roman times to the Holy Inquisition. The town also claims to be the geographical center of Italy (although this claim is disputed with Rieti) and is home to the ancient Roman bridge Ponte Cadorna which has become a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts.

Depending on the weather and your preferences, you can also make a quick stop at the Mole of Narni, an enchanting body of water near the Black River Gorges that offers unique scenery with emerald and turquoise waters surrounded by lush vegetation.

Your driver will return you to your accommodation in the evening.

Simply outstanding! We visited Italy in September & used Luxe for all our tours and we can honestly say, they were the best! Right from the start, communication was easy and professional. Amy and her guides were able to customize their tours to suit our interests! If you want bespoke tours, I wouldn’t use anyone else. We would highly recommend Luxe & will definitely use them again when we next visit Italy!

10 day trip to Italy Planned a 10 day trip in Italy with Travel by Luxe. The experience did not disappoint. We had wonderful guides and terrific drivers. Initially spoke to Amy but then dealt with Marta in planning trip. Best parts of the trip included trip to Pisa and Lucca with Viola. Luxe arranged for tickets to climb the leaning tower which my son said was the highlight of the trip. In Lucca we took a leisurely bike ride on the walls of the city and had one of our best lunches at restaurant Viola took us to. Also had Viola for a tour of Florence. She was very adaptive to our family that included two teenagers and made sure to include activities that kept their attention. Also great experience with Kylie in Rome who took us on a fantastic food tour. Finally, perhaps a bit off the beaten path but did a tour of a prosciutto factory near Parma and then had lunch cooked by our guide, Stefani, that our boys really enjoyed. Would also recommend the bike tour of Appian Way with Glenn- would suggest the e-bikes but we did with regular bikes and didn’t feel it was too difficult. Marta was also very responsive to our questions while we were in Italy. Our hotel in Rome (Rome Life), in Venice (Sina Centurion Palace) and in Modena (Best Western) were all terrific. Wonderful trip which I would not have been able to plan without Luxe.

Day 5: Guided Tour of Spello, The City of Flowers

The tour continues with a visit to the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, a beautiful Romanesque church that dates back to the 12th century. Inside the church, you’ll be able to admire the frescoes and the intricate sculptures, as well as the beautiful mosaics on the floor.

Another highlight of the tour is a visit to the Porta Consolare, an ancient Roman gate that dates back to the 1st century AD. The gate is one of the most important Roman monuments in the region, and it offers great views of the town and the surrounding countryside.

This tour takes you through the winding medieval streets of Assisi, allowing you to take in the sights and sounds of this historic town. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Basilicas of Santa Chiara and St. Francis, home to one of Italy’s largest collections of church art.

Assisi, located on a gentle hill beneath the summit of Monte Subasio, is known for being the birthplace of Saint Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order, which is integral to the history of the area, having been settled by ancient Umbrian tribes before becoming a Roman town. Today, it remains a popular pilgrimage site and a must-see destination for those interested in history, art, and culture.

Eremo delle Carceri Visit

Experience a unique and immersive visit to the Eremo della Carceri, a place located away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, where you can truly “live” the history and atmosphere.

This 800-year-old retreat is located about five kilometers from the city center, in the direction of Mount Subasio, and offers a peaceful and contemplative environment, much like the Franciscan environments of the Middle Ages.

The Eremo della Carceri, meaning “hermitage of the prison” in Latin, was a place where Francis and his fellow friars sought retirement, penitence, and solitude. They would retreat to the tiny Chapel of Saint Mary and the caves and ravines of the mount to pray and meditate.

After your guided tour here your chauffeur will deliver you back to your Perugia accommodation.

Perched on a hilltop, Montepulciano sits on a ridge that separates the Val D’Orcia from the Val di Chiana. The town, which still maintains its medieval layout, is a beautiful Renaissance hill town surrounded by a picturesque landscape. Montepulciano is known for its exceptional vineyards and is considered one of the premier winemaking regions in the world, making it a popular tourist destination in Tuscany.

The best way to explore the sophisticated historical center is to walk through it. Starting at Porta al Prato, in the lower part of the town, walk uphill to the summit and Piazza Grande, which is the site of many internationally significant cultural events. Along the way, you will encounter numerous Renaissance palaces, artisan workshops, and beautifully adorned churches that are even more impressive inside.
